Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Traveler RN - Nebraska (Boys Town)

Job Overview

• Specialty: PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
• Location: Boys Town, Nebraska
• Contract Length: 12 weeks (interpreted as 12 weeks based on description)
• Shift: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM, 36 hours per week, fixed shifts with no frequent schedule changes
• Start Date: ASAP, ideally within 2-3 weeks
• Patient Population: Primarily pediatric patients with some adult patients in the medical/surgical unit during emergencies

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct care for critically ill pediatric patients in a high-acuity setting
• Manage cardiorespiratory conditions, sedation infusions, and post-neurosurgical recovery
• Ventilator management including hospital and home ventilators, suctioning, and airway management
• Titrate common sedation medications (e.g., Versed, Fentanyl, Precedex) and manage titratable drips safely
• Care for patients with complex neurological and respiratory conditions, including:

  • Neurosurgical cases (tumor resections, VP shunts, spinal cord untethering, craniofacial reconstruction, ICP monitoring, EVD)
  • Neurological conditions such as epilepsy and seizure management
  • Respiratory distress, sepsis, and respiratory failure
• Assist with arterial and central line placement and monitoring
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for comprehensive patient care
• Support resuscitation efforts for emergent adult patients in the medical/surgical unit (ACLS preferred but not required)

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 2 years in PICU or equivalent high-acuity pediatric setting (highest required years of experience)
• Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – Required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – Preferred but not required for immediate start

Skills and Experience

• Expertise in cardiorespiratory monitoring and ventilator management
• Experience managing sedation infusions and titratable drips
• Skilled in handling complex pediatric neurological cases and invasive monitoring (arterial and central lines)
• Ability to care for pediatric patients in distress, including respiratory and sepsis cases
• Experience or comfort working in environments where adult emergency care may be required

Working Conditions

• Fixed day/night rotation shifts, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, 36 hours per week
• No on-call requirement
• Contract duration approximately 10-13 weeks with potential extension
• Work environment includes pediatric ICU with occasional adult emergency support
