Job Opportunity: Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Oncology
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:15 AM - 6:45 PM)
- Average Daily Census: 24 patients (24 rooms/beds)
- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet designated
- Total Staffed Beds: 562
- Charting System: Cerner
- Scrub Color: Any solid color
- Parking: Permit required, no cost
Experience & Requirements
- Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in Oncology nursing
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required
- First-timers Accepted: Yes
- Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
- Certifications:
- Chemotherapy certification preferred
- ACLS, BLS, and PALS required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)
- Licensure: Must have an active Illinois nursing license or be in the application process
- Floating: Will float within scope as needed
- Schedule Flexibility: Open to block schedule requests (discuss with manager)
- Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days
Clinical Skills & Special Requirements
- Chemotherapy Skills:
- Administration of chemotherapy (IV push, continuous infusion, oral)
- Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy
- Management and disposal of cytotoxic spills
- Monitoring chemotherapy and recognizing abnormal lab values
- IV Therapy/Infusion Skills:
- Accessing ports and central lines (including PICC)
- Administration of coagulation factors, antifungals, antivirals, blood/blood products
- Central line blood draws and care
- Starting IVs
Onboarding & Compliance Requirements
- Background Checks: Comprehensive checks including criminal, sex offender, and federal databases within 30 days of start
- Education Verification: Degree verification required (official or unofficial transcripts accepted if pending)
- Competency Exam: Required for all clinical candidates
- Photo for Badge: Required within one week of signing contract
- Physical Exam: Required within one year of start, must confirm good health and ability to perform job functions
- Fit Mask Test: Required (specific mask types accepted), not completed onsite
- TB Testing: 2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold within one year of start; chest x-ray if positive test
- Immunizations:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
- Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or declination)
- Varicella (2 vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Drug Testing: 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- References: Two professional references required
Additional Notes
- Candidate must comply with Illinois-specific state searches and registry requirements prior to start
- Fingerprints must be completed in Illinois for candidates without an IL license
- Candidate may be called off up to 36 hours during the 13-week assignment without pay for those hours
- On-call shifts are not required
This position is ideal for an Oncology RN with at least 1 year of experience, comfortable with chemotherapy administration and IV therapy, seeking a travel contract in a Level I trauma, Magnet-designated acute care hospital.
