Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a travel/contract position in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) setting. This role requires flexibility with weekend shifts and floating to different levels of care as needed.


Key Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (First time travelers accepted)
  • Weekend Requirement: Must be able to work 50% of weekends during the contract
  • Floating: Required; may float to Med-Surg, PCU, ICU units
  • Staffing Ratios: 1:3-4 (rarely 1:5 during emergencies)
  • Precepting: Must agree to precepting students or being shadowed
  • Locals: Not accepted

Clinical Skills & Preferences

  • Telemetry experience required
  • Proficient in neuro experience and management of drips
  • Preferred: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS/BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification

Unit Information

  • Patient types include CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors and resections, seizures, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and large wound care

Important Policies

  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training

Licensure & Compliance

  • Indiana RN license required (note: as of 11/30/24, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at this facility except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers)
  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport required
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and education verification required
  • Drug screening (10 panel) required within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start (specific respirators approved)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
    • TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required (no declinations)

Competency & Orientation

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Unit competency exam required
  • Color blind testing required (Ishihara or equivalent)
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and safety training required prior to start
  • HIPAA and confidentiality agreements required

References & Employment History

  • Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles
  • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must be flexible with weekend scheduling and floating assignments
  • Precepting and student shadowing are part of the role
  • Locals are not accepted for this travel position
  • Perioperative and certain specialty RNs are exempt from some licensure restrictions
