ICU RN Job Opportunity - Kearney, Nebraska
Position Details
- Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU
- Location: Kearney, Nebraska
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Department: ICU
- Number of Beds: 33 beds (average daily census: 16)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress
- Nurse Aide Support: Available based on census; may assist with 1:1s or floor support; Healthcare Support Tech present 3 days/week (M-F, 0800-1630)
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
- Respiratory therapy equipment use ranges from nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory equipment beyond this
- RNs must read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (monitor brand: GE); tele techs provide oversight
Certifications & Requirements
- Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Driver’s license required at submittal to verify distance compliance (must be outside 50 miles radius)
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation (exam covers skills learned)
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
Scheduling & Orientation
- Shifts: 0630-1830 (day), 1830-0630 (night)
- Self-scheduling allowed for core staff and travelers
- Block scheduling generally not approved except possibly weekends only
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
- Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
- Return to Orientation (RTO) required within 7 days or less for the 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
Additional Notes
- Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity
- Floating assignments typically to PCU or occasionally MedSurg with typical patient ratios (1:4 or 1:5)
- Fingernail policy strictly enforced
- Blocked scheduling requests generally denied unless for weekends only; duo scheduling requests not accepted
