Description
Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
- Shift: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM with holiday rotation
- Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends, including 1 weekend shift (10:30 AM - 11:00 PM Saturday or Sunday) per month
- On-Call Requirement: Up to 4 call shifts per month (End of Shift to 7 AM), including up to 2 weekend call shifts (7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM Saturday or Sunday)
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units or sister facilities
Experience & Licensure Requirements
- Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years strongly preferred
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
- Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
- Certifications Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
- Preferred Experience: Scrub experience in OR
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
- Charting system: EPIC
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
- Parking available with a permit and registration fee (details not included here)
- During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education Verification: Required (diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder)
- Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license or compact license mandatory
- NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire
Certifications & Competencies
- Mandatory Certifications:
- BLS (AHA or ARC)
- Radiation Badge (required for OR and related specialties)
- Additional Certifications (as applicable):
- ACLS (required for certain units, verify with specific unit)
- PALS (required for pediatric units except Peds OR)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - not required for ER RNs
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for ER)
- Other certifications as required by unit or specialty
- Competency Exams: Required, including medication/pharmacology competency and OR competency exams
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations & Titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests accepted
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
Additional Notes
- Radiation badge processing may take 5-7 days; candidates cannot start without it
- Travelers must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start; failure to complete may result in being sent home
- Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency response duties during hurricane season
- Scrub color and other OR supplies provided by facility
This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with at least 2 years of experience, who are flexible with scheduling and able to meet the comprehensive credentialing and health requirements of a Level I trauma academic medical center.
