Description
Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Silverdale, Washington
Specialty: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of L&D nursing experience (will consider 1 year if candidate has multiple prior travel contracts)
- Prior travel experience required (No first-time travelers)
Licenses & Certifications
- Active Washington State RN License (Pending license submissions accepted; temp license takes ~4 weeks)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Preferred: Intermediate or advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
Unit Details
- Birthing Center / Mother Baby Unit
- 34 total L&D beds
- 2 OR suites for C-sections
- 2 triage beds
- 14 postpartum beds
- Approximately 150-180 births per month (2,133 deliveries in 2022)
- Staffing ratios: 1:2 for L&D, 1:3-4 for couplets (mother-baby pairs)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Gestational age 33 weeks and above
- High-risk pregnancies including preeclampsia, diabetes, psychosocial issues, and positive illicit substance use
Skills & Responsibilities
- Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
- Comfortable attending deliveries independently and circulating in C-sections
- Able to assist with catching and transitioning newborns
- Responsible for titrating drips such as Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin
- Free charge nurse role on both shifts (charge nurse does not take patient assignment)
- Must be able to function in postpartum care and transition babies; no floating outside the department or to NICU
Team & Support
- 24/7 in-house OB/GYN hospitalist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
- 24/7 OB anesthesia provider with call room on unit
- One surgical tech available 24/7
- Patient care assistant with clerical duties on each shift
- Respiratory therapist equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP)
- Tele/Monitor techs available for PACU after C-section; RNs read their own strips
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: Centricity-perinatal
Scheduling & Shifts
- Block scheduling available upon request
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (days: Sat & Sun; nights: Fri & Sat)
- Holiday rotation with permanent staff
- Night shift hours: 1900-0730, every other weekend (Fri and Sat nights)
- Call/standby requirement: 45-minute response time when on standby
Orientation & Onboarding
- 8-hour compliance orientation with manager
- 8-hour EPIC training
- 2-3 twelve-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
Unit Policies & Notes
- Strict surgical hand scrub policy: no jewelry on hands/forearms, no artificial nails or enhancements, natural fingernails only (clean, well-manicured, ≤ ¼ inch)
- No open lesions or breaks in skin integrity on hands/forearms
- Scrubs and locker provided
- Manager is supportive and provides feedback to ensure quality care
- Travelers must be adaptable to unit workflows, policies, and feedback
This position is ideal for experienced L&D RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working independently in a busy, high-acuity birthing center.
