Job Opportunity: Operating Room Technician
Location: Norwich, New York
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Job Summary
Under general direction, the Operating Room Technician observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed, and actively participates in patient care and safety. The role involves conservative use of OR supplies and functioning as a team member of the OR staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow Infection Control policies and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
- Adhere to sterile technique principles preoperatively and intra-operatively.
- Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and related items during procedures.
- Anticipate surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
- Maintain an organized operative field, keeping instruments clean and properly placed.
- Keep accurate counts of sponges, tape, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
- Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment per preference cards; identify conflicts or problems.
- Care for instruments and supplies appropriately after each case.
- Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting in preoperative equipment checks.
- Display knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemical, gases) in the OR.
- Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource and act as a resource for new personnel.
- Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under surgeon’s direction.
- Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
- Expedite efficient OR turnover between cases.
- Take rotating call duty.
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested.
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Certifications:
- NCCT – Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C)
- OR-Certified Surgical Technologist - NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) or National Healthcareer Association certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Operating Room experience.
- Previous Surgical Technologist experience.
Experience Requirements
- No specific years of experience required.
Prior Travel Experience
- Not required.
