Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Cardiac ICU (CVPICU)
Location: Newark, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Schedule
- Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Floating: May float to Pediatrics and NICU; additional float units possible based on skill set and hospital needs (floating confirmed with traveler)
- Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2+
- Unit Size: 19 beds
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of PICU critical care experience
- Minimum 1 year of cardiac experience (both must be documented on skills checklist)
- Competency in caring for cardiac patients with conditions such as:
- ASD (arterial septal defect), VSD (ventricular septal defect), AV Canal Defect
- Valve replacements, Glenn and Fontan procedures, Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
- Post cardiac catheterization and ablations, cardiac transplant, post cardiac surgery
- Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemonitoring required
- Experience with BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies required
- Prior travel experience is required (first-time travelers are not accepted)
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required for all adult critical care units; confirm if required for this unit
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - Preferred but not required
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (confirm with program coordinator)
Clinical Competencies & Testing
- Must complete Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam within 72 hours of signing
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for critical care units
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) required with remediation process if failed
- Color Blind Testing within 1 year of start (if applicable)
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Employment Application or Resume with 7 years of work history
- 2 References within the last 2 years (at least one managerial)
- Skills Checklist updated annually (must document required PICU and cardiac skills)
- Background Check within 30 days of start (including aliases, nationwide, sex offender, etc.)
- Drug Screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
- Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Respiratory Medical Clearance and Fit Test (on-site fit testing mandatory)
- Latex Allergy Questionnaire (if applicable)
- Annual Education Sign Off and Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- Vendor Medical Clearance Form if history of positive TB
- Other facility-specific documents and attestations as required

- Charting System: EPIC
- Scrub Color: Navy Blue
- Must be competent in pediatric cardiac critical care and able to handle complex cardiac patients
- Floating assignments depend on hospital needs and skill set
- Must comply with all facility-specific policies and training requirements
This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses with cardiac expertise who have prior travel contract experience and are ready for a 13-week assignment in a busy pediatric cardiac ICU setting.
