Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN)

Specialty: Cardiac Telemetry/Stepdown (6N)
Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Unit: 6N Cardiac/Tele - PCU (Stepdown)
  • Beds: 36 beds (higher acuity than most telemetry units)
  • Nurse:Patient Ratios:
    • MedSurg/Telemetry acuity: 1:5 (rarely 1:6 during discharges)
    • PCU acuity: 1:4

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Cardiac patients including:
    • CR bands
    • Post catheterization
    • Acute myocardial infarction (AMI)
    • Post-operative lung surgeries (after CCU)
    • Respiratory failure
    • Chest tubes
    • Pacemakers
    • Post PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention)
  • Note: No arterial lines or sheath pulling required

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Experience Requirements

  • Must be able to titrate drips (cardiac and others) including:
    • Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Integrelin, Heparin, Ativan, Lasix, Nitro (up to 50 mcg)
  • More than likely requires Stepdown RN skills rather than Telemetry RN only
  • Years of Specialty Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume at least moderate experience due to acuity and skills required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not specified as required

Nursing & Support Staff

  • Charge Nurse available 24/7
    • Day shift charge nurse does not take patient assignments
    • Night shift charge nurse takes patient assignments
  • CNAs assigned approximately 1 per 9 patients
  • Team nursing model preferred: 1 RN + 1 CNA for 6-7 patients

Respiratory Therapy & Equipment

  • CPAP and BiPAP available on unit; managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT)
  • Nurses are not expected to manage vents or trachs
  • RTs administer respiratory treatments

Telemetry & Monitoring

  • Phillips telemetry monitors used
  • Monitor techs available, but RNs must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips

Scheduling & Shifts

  • 12-hour shifts: 7 AM - 7 PM and 7 PM - 7 AM
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) for both day and night shifts
  • Holiday work included in rotation with permanent staff

Floating & Other Requirements

  • Floating to MedSurg/Telemetry units as needed
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue for RNs
  • No false nails allowed

Additional Notes

  • Higher acuity stepdown unit requiring strong cardiac and drip titration skills
  • Must include a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission

This position is ideal for RNs with cardiac stepdown experience comfortable with titrating drips and managing higher acuity telemetry patients.
