Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (MedSurg RN - Renal)

Location: Florence, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (MedSurg RN with Renal focus)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Days, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 6-7 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
  • Holiday Rotation: Yes
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: Yes, may float to other med/surg units as needed

Experience & Licensing Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
  • Licensing: South Carolina RN license or Compact license must be active prior to start
  • Certifications Required:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA or ARC only
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA or ARC only (facility-specific)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - as required (AHA or ARC only)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - as required (AHA/AAP only)
    • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., Trauma Nursing Core Course, Electronic Fetal Monitoring)

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Block Scheduling: May be requested but not guaranteed
  • Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during June-November (peak in August-September). New or extended assignments during this time should be considered carefully.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Must include SSN Trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Not required for this facility, but diploma/transcripts preferred as placeholder if needed
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license processing times vary (3-5 weeks for permanent, 24-48 hours for walk-through/temp license if eligible)
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs and LPNs/LVNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Immunizations & Health Requirements:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days (T-spot or Q-Gold accepted; 2-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold for Florence location)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if low titer
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination form
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if low titer
    • Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
    • COVID-19 Vaccines: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
  • Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for all patient-facing travelers
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Performance Evaluation: Must be dated within 12 months of start
  • Employment History: Last 3 clinical employers verified (exceptions apply)

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 4 hours for Florence location
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo required
  • Acknowledgments & Agreements: Candidates must sign assignment acknowledgment, code of conduct, confidentiality agreements, HR policy manual review, systems user agreement, user access request, and HIPAA confidentiality agreement prior to start
  • Additional Facility Documents: MINI orientation review and acknowledgement required

Additional Notes

  • Travelers may be required to float within scope to other med/surg units.
  • Locals are not accepted for this position.
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift every 2 weeks.
  • Block scheduling may be requested but is not guaranteed.
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency response duties during hurricane season.

This position is ideal for Registered Nurses with at least 1 year of MedSurg experience, who hold or can obtain a South Carolina or Compact RN license, and are comfortable working 12-hour day shifts with weekend and holiday rotations in a travel/contract role.
