Job Opportunity: RN - PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Austin, Texas
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Pediatric ICU with 6 beds
  • Staffed by 13 total team members, typically 2-3 nurses per shift
  • Shift structure:
    • Day Shift: 1 charge RN and 1 PICU RN
    • Night Shift: 1 charge RN and 1 PICU RN
  • Patient Ratios:
    • 2 ICU patients : 1 RN
    • 1 ICU/2 IMC patients : 1 RN
    • 1 ICU and 2 MS patients : 1 RN
  • Equipment used: Alaris IV pumps, ventilators
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system: Meditech
  • Permanent day shift positions available

Schedule & Shift Details

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
  • 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • No call requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license for Texas
  • Certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Minimum 1 year of PICU experience (higher years of experience requirement applied)
  • Previous PICU experience with ventilators and drips required

Preferred Qualifications

  • NICU experience
  • 1-2 years PICU experience preferred

Typical Procedures & Patient Care

  • Care for patients on High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) with respiratory illnesses
  • Seizure monitoring (EMU)
  • Variety of PICU diagnoses (no endocrine service, no ECMO, no trauma services)

Work Environment & Culture

  • Smaller unit with strong teamwork and camaraderie among RNs, RTs, ancillary support, physicians, and pediatric units
  • Positive, team-player attitude with openness to feedback is a good fit
  • CLABSI/CAUTI free since 2014

Dress Code

  • Scrubs color: Navy
  • No artificial nails allowed

Additional Notes

  • No prior travel experience required for this position
  • No call required during the assignment
