Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a travel/contract position in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) setting. This role requires flexibility with weekend shifts and the ability to float to different levels of care including Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU. The facility is a teaching hospital where travel nurses may be asked to precept or have students shadow them.


Key Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
  • Telemetry experience required
  • Proficient in neurological nursing and management of drips
  • Preferred: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience

Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to float to various units as needed
  • Comfortable working with patients with CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and wound care
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
  • First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted

Required Documentation & Compliance

Licensure & Background

  • Valid RN license with online verification within 30 days of start
  • Background checks including 7-year history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and education verification
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved)

Immunizations & Health

  • Required: Hepatitis B, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
  • Flu vaccination required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31) or approved medical/religious exemption
  • Color blind exam required (Ishihara or equivalent)

Competency & Orientation

  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
  • Unit competency exam
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and safety modules prior to start
  • Agreement to HIPAA and confidentiality policies

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Travelers must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them
  • On-site PAPR available at Methodist and University campuses with automatic approval

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable in a fast-paced, neuro/trauma-focused PCU environment who are flexible with scheduling and floating requirements.
