Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
- Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
Specialty & Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
- Minimum 2 years of experience required in Telemetry, proficient neuro experience, and management of drips.
- Preferred experience: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma.
- Floating required: may float to Med-Surg, PCU, ICU units with resources provided.
- Staffing ratios: 1:3-4 (rarely 1:5 during emergencies).
Unit Information
- Patient types: CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors and resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs, falls), GI surgeries, large wound cleaning and closures.
Certifications Required
- ACLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
- BLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM)
Licensure & Background
- Valid RN license with online verification within 30 days of start.
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including SSN trace, county criminal, statewide, national sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification, and international search if applicable.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations/vaccinations required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
Competency & Documentation
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Unit competency exam required.
- Skills checklist required within 12 months and annually.
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles.
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days.
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- Travelers must agree to the possibility of precepting and/or being assigned students.
- On-site PAPR is automatically approved at Methodist and University hospitals.
- Various facility-specific orientation and compliance modules must be completed prior to start.
This position offers a dynamic environment with diverse patient populations and requires flexibility, strong neuro and telemetry skills, and a commitment to teaching and floating as needed.
