Job Description

  • Perform all nursing responsibilities specific to the Med/Surg unit.
  • Implement procedures and theories related to Med/Surg nursing practice.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of nursing care for healthcare team use.
  • Complete initial patient assessments and develop plans of care based on patient and family needs.
  • Implement and modify plans of care through continuous evaluation.
  • Ensure patient and employee safety by identifying and addressing hazards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and provide constructive feedback.
  • Identify personal learning needs and pursue professional development.
  • Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.
  • Perform or assist with therapies including IV access (peripheral and central lines), injections (IM, SQ), and various unit procedures (chest tube management, blood glucose monitoring, PCA machine, thoracentesis, paracentesis, TPN, thrombolytic therapy, kangaroo pump, central line insertion).
  • Respond to emergency situations as an effective team member.
  • Focus on patient satisfaction through patient rounding, bedside reporting, and use of patient whiteboards.
  • Demonstrate competency in order review, transcription, and implementation.
  • Delegate patient care tasks to healthcare team members and validate completion.
  • Provide basic RN patient care activities: assessments, vital signs interpretation, admission/discharge, hourly rounding, care plan documentation, patient education.
  • Administer medications following the 5 Rights (right patient, medication, route, dose, time).
  • Maintain patient safety with fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and ambulation safety.
  • Promote a positive, healthy work and healing environment.
  • Respond promptly to patient call lights and medical needs.
  • Use critical thinking and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status.
  • Communicate effectively within the healthcare team to ensure coordinated patient care and safety.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant nursing experience.
  • ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing) degree.
  • Illinois state RN license in good standing.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association.
