Job Opportunity: Med Surg RN (Registered Nurse)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Hospital seeking Med Surg RNs for a 13-week assignment.
  • Must have BLS (AHA) certification.
  • Willingness to float to the COVID unit as needed.
  • 12-hour shifts (Day: 06:45-19:15, Night: 18:45-07:15).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (3 weekends out of a 6-week schedule).
  • Holiday rotation required.
  • Patient assignment ratio: 1:6-7 (mostly 1:7 for both day and night shifts).
  • Unit has 52 private rooms.
  • EMR system: Sunrise.
  • Nurses do not have to read cardiac strips but may do so if experienced.
  • IV team starts all IVs; RNs assess IV sites but do not start IVs.
  • Respiratory therapy and pharmacy available 24/7.
  • Floating to other Med Surg or Med Surg/Oncology units possible; may float to IMC for Med Surg overflow (no drips).
  • Orientation includes general hospital orientation plus 2 full shifts on the unit.

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

  • Ortho post-ops (e.g., joint replacements).
  • Basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions).
  • General post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies).
  • Medical diagnoses including COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, cellulitis.
  • Hemodialysis patients on the floor; peritoneal dialysis experience highly preferred.
  • COVID testing patients may remain on unit or be transferred to COVID unit depending on test duration.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license for West Virginia.
  • BLS (AHA) certification required.
  • NIHSS certification required.
  • ACLS certification is a plus but not required.
  • Must have a valid, unexpired driver’s license.

Staffing and Support

  • Charge Nurse carries a full patient assignment and is supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) who works 40 hours/week, splitting time between floor and office.
  • CNA support with 4-6 CNAs per shift (ratio 1:10-12).
  • Hospitalist and intensivist coverage 24/7.
  • IV team and PICC team available 24/7.
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7.
  • Pharmacy services available 24/7 with Pyxis system.

Additional Information

  • Scrub color: Navy blue for RNs (top, bottom, jackets; no hoodies).
  • Remote telemetry monitored on a different unit as needed.
  • Drips occasionally include heparin, rare Lasix, PCA with MSO4, possible Ativan gtt; no cardiac gtts or insulin drips.
  • Vent support includes intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow oxygen.
