Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Description

  • Step down unit caring for general medical and oncology stepdown patients (GMU)
  • Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4-6 (with support staff if ratios increase)
  • Chemotherapy admissions decrease assignment ratios
  • Floating to other med-surg areas including AU and ER to care for med-surg patients
  • Scheduling: Weekends assigned by manager/scheduler; other days self-scheduled
  • Weekend work: Every other weekend
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated
  • Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of PCU/Stepdown nursing experience

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Michigan RN License
  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • ONCC or ONS certification (pending ONS accepted, ONC must be in hand)

Required Skills

  • Administering chemotherapy via IV
  • Starting IVs
  • Experience with Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers and Sigma IV Pumps
  • EPIC for documentation

Call & Scheduling

  • No call required
  • Floating to other med-surg areas including AU and ER

Prior Travel Experience

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • I-9 and E-Verify documentation
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start (lifetime search including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, statewide, education verification, MVR)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting within 45 days of start (for certain positions; tracking only for this role)
  • Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations and health documents:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of 1 prior Tdap vaccine)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 30 days of start
    • TB questionnaire updated annually
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (no exemptions)
    • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (no exemptions)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (medical/spiritual) required for candidates starting after 11/1, with proof by 12/1 deadline
  • Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) for acute care roles; not required for non-clinical or some outpatient roles
  • References: One professional reference from supervisor/manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Additional Notes

  • Floating assignments may include med-surg and emergency department care
  • Charge RN typically not assigned patients
  • Chemo admits reduce patient assignment load
  • Block scheduling requests should be specified upfront
  • Any requests for time off after offer must be discussed with onsite manager

This position is ideal for experienced step down nurses with oncology and chemotherapy skills, comfortable with med-surg floating, and able to work a flexible schedule including every other weekend.
