Job Opportunity: OR RN Educator (Travel/Contract)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse (OR RN Educator)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an OR RN Educator with strong operating room experience to support a Level 1 Trauma Center with 29 operating rooms. The facility is an adult academic health center with specialties including cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, neurosurgery, orthopedic trauma, general surgery, ENT, urology, oral maxillofacial surgery, gynecology, plastics, and heart & lung transplant.


Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of OR nursing experience
  • At least 2 years of experience as an educator
  • Inpatient acute care experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Locals accepted

Licensure & Certifications

  • Must have an active Indiana RN license (no pending licenses accepted)
  • BLS certification required
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, NIH Stroke, and other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify per unit)

Work Schedule

  • Guaranteed hours:
    • 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours totaling 48 hours/week
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Prior Travel Experience

  • Not explicitly required; first-time travelers are accepted

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
  • Social Security Number trace, county, statewide, national sex offender, FACIS Level III
  • Education verification required
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start

Health & Immunization

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required

Competency & Skills

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Unit competency exam required
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required

References & Employment History

  • Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years
  • Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities after 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR RN travelers and certain allied/ambulatory RN roles. This position is exempt from that restriction.
  • On-site fit testing is limited and must be documented if performed.
  • Multiple facility-specific orientation and compliance documents must be completed prior to start.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete mandatory online modules prior to orientation if applicable.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic trauma center with a diverse surgical patient population while serving as an educator in the OR setting.
