Travel Nurse - Med Surg

Location: Bottineau, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Facility Type: Small Critical Access Hospital
• Unit: Med Surg (includes Med/Surg, Swing bed, & ER)
• Bed Count: 25
• Nurse to Patient Ratios:

  • Med Surg: 1:3-6
  • Swing bed: 1:10-13
• Shifts: 3 x 12-hour shifts, day/night rotation
• Scheduling: Modified self-scheduling; flexibility required to fill gaps
• Weekend Requirement: Every other to every 3rd weekend
• Holiday Requirement: May be included in holiday rotation
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: Between Med Surg/Swing bed and ER units
• Orientation: 4-8 shifts depending on assigned areas/roles
• Dress Code: Any color/print scrubs, closed-toed shoes

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Large elderly population with chronic conditions
• Common diagnoses include:

  • Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
  • Myocardial Infarction (MI)
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Atrial Fibrillation (A. Fib)
  • Cellulitis
  • GI Bleeds
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
  • Pneumonia
  • COVID-19
  • Chest Pain
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Falls
  • Weakness
  • Electrolyte Imbalances
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• Must have 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience
• RNs required to titrate drips including insulin and heparin until patient transfer
• RNs must read and interpret their own cardiac monitor strips (Phillips monitors)
• No respiratory therapists on unit; RNs perform ABGs, breathing treatments, and 12 Lead EKGs
• Experience with access/de-access ports, PICC lines, wound care/wound vac, and medication preparation

Additional Notes

• Charge Nurse typically has a light patient assignment
• Nurse aides available; ratios vary based on staffing and census
• Scrubs are not provided
• Rotating day and night shifts with weekend and holiday rotation requirements

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Dakota
• Minimum 1 year Med Surg nursing experience
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• TNCC and NIHSS certifications required
