Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - 3N Cardiac Telemetry Unit
Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Unit: 3N - Cardiac Telemetry (43 beds; semi-private with some private rooms)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Patient types: Post heart catheterization, TR Bands, CHF, COPD, post pacers (no external pacers), medical management or awaiting CABG consult, arrhythmias
- Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)
- Patient turnover: Fast paced with approximately 8-12 admissions and discharges per day
- Teamwork is emphasized; nurses are encouraged to ask for help if behind
- Unit clerk support available
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: Days (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) and Nights (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Self-scheduling allowed; block scheduling accommodated if unit needs are met
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend for travelers (permanent staff work every 3rd weekend)
- Night weekend shifts: Friday through Monday
- Day weekend shifts: Saturday and Sunday
- Holiday shifts: Travelers may be required depending on unit needs
- Call or standby is rare but possible
Clinical & Job Responsibilities
- RN must be able to read cardiac strips (monitor techs present, but RN responsibility for strip reading)
- RN titrates only Heparin drips (Cardizem & Amiodarone are not titrated; occasional titration of Lasix or Bumex)
- RN may be asked to float within the hospital, including ICU (rare) and Stepdown, but only within their skillset
- Charge nurse role available; night charge always takes patient assignment; day charge may take assignment depending on needs
- RN responsible for admissions and discharges
- PCTs assist with ADLs, FSBS, and EKGs when able; RN must be able to perform EKGs if PCT is unavailable
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current RN license
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS (AHA) required
- Must be able to read cardiac strips confidently
- Must be comfortable caring for cardiac telemetry patients with diagnoses such as CHF, COPD, arrhythmias, post heart cath, and pacers
- Must be able to titrate Heparin drips
Orientation & Training
- 1 day computer training
- 1 day floor shadowing with preceptor
- 3rd day on own
Additional Information
- Unit is accustomed to new graduates and willing to provide teaching and support
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs; scrub jackets allowed but no hoodies or sweatshirts
- Drivers license must be current and unexpired
