Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)
Location: Wrangell, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. The role requires professional knowledge, independent decision-making, and accountability for nursing actions during shifts. The nurse supports patients and families, collaborates with healthcare team members, and ensures safe, therapeutic, and efficient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently make clinical decisions and maintain accountability for nursing actions.
- Provide nursing care based on provider orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to CNAs/Techs.
- Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
- Assess patients through interviews, observations, and nursing processes, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Develop, implement, and document individualized nursing care plans.
- Educate patients, families, and staff; participate in patient care conferences and in-services.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Participate in unit goal setting, staff meetings, and maintain certifications and competencies.
- Provide leadership and guidance to other nursing staff.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska.
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
- Prior experience in the specialty area preferred.
Certifications
- BLS and PALS required upon hire.
- ACLS must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
- TNCC/ATCN and NRP certifications depending on specialty area, to be obtained within 6 months and maintained bi-annually.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of nursing care principles, diagnosis, and processes including specialty areas.
- Ability to recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions.
- Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, side effects, and complications relevant to specialty.
- Proficiency in operating and monitoring medical equipment (e.g., defibrillators, monitors, ventilators).
- Ability to assist with emergency procedures (e.g., intubations, arterial line setup).
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide leadership and work cooperatively with healthcare team members.
- Ability to implement evidence-based nursing interventions and recognize adverse signs promptly.
Additional Requirements
- Must have current Alaska RN license.
- Must have flu vaccination.
- Must submit 2 fingerprint cards upon acceptance.
- Must live at least 50 miles away from the facility location to be eligible for this travel contract.
