Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a fast-paced, high-acuity Labor and Delivery unit specializing in obstetrical care for patients 16 weeks gestation and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
- Unit also cares for high-risk patients under 16 weeks gestation.
- Procedures include scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage.
- Average patient volume: 20 births per 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1.
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15), with 36 hours offered.
- Weekend requirement: Minimum every other weekend (6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule).
- Float requirement: Float as needed on a special maternity care high-risk OB unit.
- Call requirement: None.
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite.
Experience & Skills Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience preferred; 3 years preferred for comfort due to unit challenges.
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers accepted if experienced in a large/high-volume similar setting.
- Skills: Circulate, sterile vaginal exam, and competent in immediate newborn care.
- Certifications required:
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- AWHONN Intermediate (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Unit Details
- Very fast-paced and busier than typical units; 48-hour contracts are generally not realistic.
- Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience.
- Unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
- Orientation: 24 hours.
- Scrubs provided (blue).
Patient Population
- Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for all intrapartum and high-risk antepartum/postpartum care.
- High-risk maternity patients under 16 weeks gestation.
- Obstetrical triage unit for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration).
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks within 6 months required.
- Drug testing (9-panel) within 6 months required.
- Immunizations and health screenings required including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation).
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella titers or vaccinations.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination form.
- Varicella immunity.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Various competency exams and certifications as per agency and facility requirements (e.g., medication competency, color blindness testing, EKG competency if applicable).
- Facility-specific documents such as confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and photo for badge required.
- Orientation and training modules must be completed as required by the facility.
Additional Notes
- The unit accepts contracts between 13 and 26 weeks.
- RTO (Return to Office) is limited to 7 days maximum for auto-offer.
- Candidates must be prepared for a high-volume, high-acuity environment with a strong emphasis on obstetrical and neonatal care.
- Prior OR circulate experience is highly preferred.
- First-time travelers are welcome but should have experience in similar high-volume settings.
This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery RNs looking for a challenging, fast-paced travel assignment in a specialized high-risk maternity care unit.
