Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Telemetry Unit
Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Unit: Telemetry - 2 South (20 beds, all private rooms)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a telemetry unit with 20 private rooms.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio:
- Telemetry patients: 1:5
- Stepdown patients (currently not applicable): 1:3-4
- Patient cases vary daily, ranging from 1-2 to 10 admissions/discharges.
- Patient types include telemetry monitoring, post catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry needs, and respiratory difficulties.
- Cardiac monitoring involves 10 rooms with hardwired monitors and others with portable telemetry monitors.
- Nurses expected to understand and interpret basic dysrhythmias and telemetry strips.
- Nurses place IVs and draw labs from central lines only if ordered.
- No ventilators on the unit; respiratory therapists available 24/7.
- Pharmacy support available weekdays with 24/7 main pharmacy coverage.
- Nurses reconstitute antibiotics and manage titrating medications (e.g., heparin, diltiazem).
- Orientation includes education modules, shadowing, and independent work by the third shift.
- Shifts are 12 hours:
- Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Nurses hired for specific shifts but may pick up additional shifts; self-scheduling allowed for travelers.
- Floating may occur to comparable or lower-level units.
- No on-call required.
- Weekend and holiday coverage: every other weekend and every other major holiday.
- Dress code: Nurses provide their own navy blue scrubs.
- Travelers may be asked to precept or charge nurse depending on comfort level.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum 5 years of RN experience.
- At least 1 year of prior travel nursing experience required.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - AHA
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Additional Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratio and patient acuity may vary.
- Unit staffed with 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) for 20 beds.
- Charge nurse designated but may be unavailable during full staffing.
- Barcode scanning used for patient safety during point-of-care testing.
- Respiratory therapists available on-site 24/7; nurses may administer nebulizers and breathing treatments.
- No ventilator management required.
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7.
- Floating may include assisting with boarded patients in the emergency department or ICU.
- Call-off requires minimum 2 hours’ notice before shift start.
- Block scheduling possible but not guaranteed.
This position is ideal for experienced telemetry RNs with prior travel nursing experience seeking a 13-week assignment in a supportive hospital environment with flexible scheduling options.
