Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - MedSurg (5th Floor)

Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Unit: MedSurg - 5th Floor
  • Beds: 35 (can increase up to 42; includes 9 semi-private & 17 private rooms)
  • Patient Types: Wide variety including altered mental status, some cardiac patients (no active chest pain), renal patients, cancer, stroke overflow, traumatic brain injury, appendectomy, chest tubes, wounds, etc.
  • Common Procedures: Dressing changes (wound nurse available on days), no hips/knees (these go to ortho)
  • Floating: May float to any MedSurg unit except Emergency Department or Behavioral Health

Work Schedule & Shifts

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) for both day and night shifts
  • Scheduling: Use Kronos to enter schedule requests; clinical coordinator enters and manager approves at least 2 weeks in advance for 4 weeks at a time
  • Block Scheduling: Allowed if in contract; nights usually scheduled in blocks
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holidays: Expected to work as needed based on unit needs

Staffing & Support

  • Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:5-6 for both shifts
  • Charge Nurse: Available 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7
  • Pharmacy: In-house 24/7 with Omnicell system
  • IV Team: None
  • Hospitalist: In-house 24/7

Clinical & Technical Details

  • EMR System: EPIC
  • Telemetry: Yes, monitored remotely
  • Nurse's Read Strips: Not used, but basic arrhythmia knowledge and ability to recognize fatal rhythms required
  • IV Drips: Only IV gtts for Heparin or Protonix; no titrating or cardiac drips
  • Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor on the specific floor

Appearance & Conduct

  • Scrub Color: Navy blue scrubs or white jacket; undershirt white or navy
  • Hair: Must be natural hair color (no pink, blue, etc.)
  • Tattoos: Excessive or distasteful tattoos must be covered

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • License: Valid RN license for West Virginia
  • Certifications: BLS (AHA) required; ACLS preferred

Additional Requirements

  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Fully vaccinated required (2 doses Moderna or Pfizer, or 1 dose J&J)
  • Exemptions: Medical or religious exemptions require approval through a formal exemption process

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty Experience: MedSurg experience required (years not explicitly stated; assume minimum 2 years based on typical MedSurg roles)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

  • Drivers license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
