Description
Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with Medical Surgical specialty for a travel/contract position. The role involves working primarily 12-hour night shifts with options for 36 or 48 hours. Nurses will be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters. Floating between units is required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical experience, including experience within the last year
- Medical Surgical and Telemetry experience with telemetry remote monitoring
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with use of Rapid Response Team
- Interpretation of dysrhythmias
- IV insulin protocols
- Colostomy care
- Feeding tube care and management
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draw
- Peripheral line care and management
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MS/Telemetry units
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry unit monitoring
- Accessing ports
- Insulin management
- Stroke (CVA) care
- Surgical drains
- Interpretation of ABGs
- Tracheostomy management
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Work Environment & Unit Details
- Patient diagnoses include dementia, diabetes, COVID-19, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, and typical medical/surgical cases.
- Unit includes isolation areas for COVID patients and multi-level care including stepdown units (staffed by stepdown nurses).
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
- Floating between units required
- Weekend shifts required: 12-16 per contract
- Orientation: 24 hours unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one (attendance at classes required)
- Scrubs: Navy or white
Scheduling & Shift Details
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts
- Hours: 36 or 48 hours accepted
- Scheduling based on unit needs
- Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation
Testing & Competency Requirements
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams required
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required
- Various competency exams and certifications may be required depending on unit assignment
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Drug screening within 6 months of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Physical exam and health documents per travel agency standards
- Background checks within 6 months required
Additional Notes
- Nurses must be prepared to work during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster situations.
- Floating and weekend work are mandatory.
- Must comply with hospital policies, confidentiality agreements, and complete required education modules including medication safety and non-Novant health worker orientation.
- Photo for badge required prior to start.
- Must complete all required documentation and training as per facility and travel agency standards.
This position is ideal for Medical Surgical RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are flexible with floating and disaster response duties, and who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment.
