Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (L&D RN)
Location: Silverdale, Washington
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced L&D RN for a travel contract in a busy birthing center with approximately 150-180 births per month. The unit includes 34 L&D beds, 2 OR suites for C-sections, 2 triage beds, and 14 postpartum beds.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years L&D nursing experience (1 year considered only if candidate has multiple prior travel contracts)
- Prior Travel Experience: Required (No first-time travelers)
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Active Washington RN license (pending license submissions accepted; temp license takes ~4 weeks)
- BLS, ACLS, NRP certifications required
- Preferred: Intermediate or advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) certification
- Skills:
- Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
- Comfortable attending deliveries independently and circulating in C-sections
- Able to assist with catching and transitioning babies
- Able to titrate drips such as Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin
Unit Information & Environment
- Patient Population: Gestational age 33 weeks and above; includes high-risk patients such as preeclampsia, diabetic, psychosocial issues, and positive illicit substance use
- Staffing Ratios:
- L&D: 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Couplets (mother/baby): 1:3-4 ratio
- Support Staff:
- One surgical tech 24/7
- Patient care assistant with clerical duties on each shift
- 24/7 in-house OB/GYN hospitalist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
- 24/7 OB anesthesia provider with call room on unit
- Respiratory therapist typically assigned to family birth
- Tele/Monitor techs available for PACU after C-section; RNs read their own strips
- Equipment: Centricity-perinatal electronic fetal monitoring system
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts with block scheduling available upon request
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat & Sun; Nights: Fri & Sat)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate with permanent staff
- Call/Standby: Standby response time is 45 minutes
- Floating: No floating outside of Labor & Delivery/Postpartum unit; must be able to function in postpartum and attend low-risk deliveries
- Orientation:
- 8 hours compliance training with manager
- 8 hours EPIC training
- 2-3 twelve-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
- Dress Code: Scrubs and locker provided
Unit Policies & Additional Notes
- Strict surgical hand scrub policy: no jewelry on hands/forearms, no artificial nails or enhancements, natural fingernails only (clean, well-manicured, ≤ ¼ inch), no open lesions or breaks in skin integrity
- Manager emphasizes quality work and provides feedback; travelers should be adaptable to workflows, policies, and procedures
This position is ideal for experienced L&D RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working independently in a high-volume, high-acuity birthing center.
