Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
Seeking Med/Surg skilled Registered Nurses for a Medical Surgical/Oncology unit. The primary patient population includes general medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
Required Qualifications
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
- Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
- Required Certifications:
- Oncology Certification (ONC) prior to start (must be able to administer chemotherapy)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Skills Required:
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- Med/Surg nursing skills
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draw
- Peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Heparin and insulin administration
- Surgical drains and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care and wound vac management
- Preferred Skills/Certifications:
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)
- Charge nurse experience
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
Work Details
- Shift: Nights
- Patient Ratios: Approximately 1:6
- Contract Length: 13-26 weeks accepted
- Call Requirement: Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
- Float Requirement: Floating to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations such as inpatient holding in the ED or other medical patient care areas
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
- Orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
- Uniform: Navy blue and white scrubs
- Additional Expectations:
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
- Assigned to Storm Team/Hurricane Team; may be required to work during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings required
- Shifts called out must be made up with rescheduled shifts
Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details
- Common diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, acute renal failure, encephalopathy, failure to thrive, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection
- Daily census approximately 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census periods
- Unit systems include PYXIS (medication), EPIC (documentation), and SBAR (communication)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks within 6 months required
- Drug testing (9-panel) within 6 months required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year required
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Education verification and licensure verification required
- Various facility-specific documents and trainings required, including medication safety, confidentiality agreement, hospital policies, and annual compliance training
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules (approx. 8 hours) prior to start
- Candidates will be assigned a Corp ID and must complete I-Learn login and training within 24 hours of receiving credentials
- Floating and call requirements are mandatory
- Must be prepared to work in disaster or emergency situations as part of the Storm/Hurricane Team
