Registered Nurse - Med Surg Ortho Trauma
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (Day and Night coverage available)
Unit: Med Tele / Ortho RN - 4th Floor North & South
Beds: 55
Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
Orientation: 2 days unit/department specific orientation
Job Description
Seeking traveling Med-Surg nurses to provide care for patients with diagnoses including joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive. Nurses will manage multiple discharges and admissions daily and must be able to handle a fast-paced environment with good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and cultural sensitivity (including Spanish, Karen, Burmese patients).
Responsibilities
- Titrate drips such as heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
- Manage PCA pumps and other common titratable/set rate drips
- Collaborate with charge nurses (charge nurse takes assignment)
- Work alongside nurse aides/patient care techs (ratio 1:10-20) and tele/monitor techs (tele techs interpret; RNs maintain tele awareness)
- Float to other medical surgical areas or units as needed
- Participate in hourly rounding and maintain responsiveness to patient needs
Scheduling & Requirements
- Shifts: 0630-1900 or 1830-0700
- Weekend: Typically every other weekend, with possible additional coverage based on demand
- Holidays: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
- Limited block scheduling available; travelers will be scheduled
- Radius rule: Must live within 50 miles and not currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at certain affiliated facilities
- Return to work required within 7 days of contract start; no additional return to work time approved
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license in Nebraska
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS preferred
- Valid driver’s license required at submission
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
- Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas
