Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Trauma ICU
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Trauma ICU
- Number of Beds: 18
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4
- Patient Population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
- Common Diagnoses: Various trauma injuries, sepsis, stroke, ARDS, MODS, COPD, cardiac arrest
- Equipment & Procedures:
- CVPs, IABP, Impella (core staff will take if no experience)
- Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
- Zoll-Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol, Bell Mont rapid transfuse
- RN Responsibilities:
- Titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
- Troubleshoot respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators
- Read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips (Draeger heart monitoring system)
- Support Staff:
- Charge nurse on each shift who also takes patient assignments
- Nurse aides/patient care techs with a ratio of 1:18
Schedule & Orientation
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830 and 1830-0630)
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling managed by unit manager based on needs
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- Floating: Required to float to inpatient units excluding Maternity and NICU
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current RN license for Nebraska
- ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book)
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance
- No history of license or background issues
- Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
Additional Information
- This is a fast-paced unit caring for critically ill patients
- Successful nurses demonstrate strong critical thinking, a positive attitude, and teamwork skills
- Candidates must not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN within 50 miles at any related facilities
- No first-time travelers accepted
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
Note: This position requires prior experience in trauma ICU nursing. Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be considered.
