Travel Nurse - Med Surg

Location: Bottineau, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

Seeking a Travel Nurse for a 13-week contract with day and night shift openings in a small critical access hospital. The unit includes Med Surg, Swing bed, and ER patient care.


Unit Details

  • Unit Type: Med Surg, Swing bed, ER
  • Beds: 25
  • Nurse to Patient Ratios:
    • Med Surg: 1:3-6
    • Swing bed: 1:10-13
  • Patient Population: Large elderly population with chronic conditions
  • Common Diagnoses: Diabetes Mellitus, Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, Cellulitis, GI Bleeds, UTI, Pneumonia, COVID, Chest Pain, Gastroenteritis, Falls, Weakness, Electrolyte Imbalances, COPD

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Dakota
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Experience working with geriatric patients
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
    • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Shifts: 3 - 12 hour shifts, day/night rotation
  • Scheduling: Modified self-scheduling; flexibility required to fill gaps
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other to every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: May be asked to work holidays on rotation
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating: Required between Med Surg, Swing bed, and ER units

Additional Information

  • Charge Nurse typically has a light patient assignment
  • Nurse aides available; ratios vary by staffing and census
  • Respiratory Therapy equipment not on unit; RNs perform ABGs, breathing treatments, and 12 Lead EKGs
  • Dress Code: Any color/print scrubs, closed-toed shoes
  • Orientation: 4-8 shifts depending on assigned roles/areas
  • Responsibilities include acute Med Surg, Swing bed, ER care, access/de-access ports, PICC lines, wound care/wound vac, and medication preparation

Generally speaking, Host Healthcare doesn't always have the highest rate on the market. Having gone with competing agencies in the past, I have often been disappointed and unsupported and ultimately found it wasn't worth the small pay bump
