Registered Nurse (Med/Tele/PCU)
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Unit Type: Medical/Telemetry/Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Number of Beds: 32
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shifts: 1:4-5
- Night shifts: occasional 1:5-6
- PCU overflow: 1:3
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics with cardiac conditions including cardiac caths, EP studies, pacemakers, alcohol-related issues, COVID-19 (Bipap), general surgical patients with heart history, pneumonia, acute on chronic conditions, influenza, sepsis.
Required Skills & Experience
- Must have PCU experience and be able to read and interpret cardiac strips.
- Telemetry/cardiac nursing experience preferred.
- Epic electronic health record experience preferred but not required.
- First-time travel nurses are acceptable.
- RN must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitro, Nipride, Lasix, and low dose Dopamine (no Levophed).
- Prior travel experience is not required.
Certifications & Licenses
- Required:
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Dakota
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Shift & Scheduling
- Shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Rotation: 7-7 rotation will not occur more than once weekly; manager may consider blocked schedules.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirements.
Additional Information
- Charge nurse present on both shifts, occasionally takes a light patient load (2-3 patients).
- Nurse aides/patient care technicians support the unit with a goal ratio of 1:10.
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes Bipap, trachs, Airvo; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage these devices.
- Telemetry/monitor techs present on unit and at nurse’s station.
- Floating: Nurses may float to PCU, medical-surgical, and some ER hold areas as needed.
- Orientation: 2 shifts (12 hours each) of unit-specific orientation, typically Friday and Saturday of the first week.
- Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed.
- Must be able to start within 7 days of contract start (Return to Office requirement).
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated health systems.

This is a 13-week contract for an experienced Med/Tele/PCU RN with strong cardiac telemetry skills and PCU experience. The role requires critical thinking for titrating drips and interpreting cardiac strips, with a supportive team environment and a mix of adult and geriatric patients with complex cardiac and medical conditions.
