Description
Registered Nurse (PICU) - West Virginia, Morgantown
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience to provide critical care in a 20-bed PICU unit. The unit cares for pediatric patients and may include some adult patients. The role involves working closely with a multidisciplinary team including pediatricians, residents, advanced practice providers, and respiratory therapists.

Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of PICU experience (hard requirement)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Pediatric patients (may include adults if comfortable)
- Congenital heart conditions
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Respiratory issues
- Neurosurgery patients
- Patients with tracheostomies, ventilators, and G-tubes
Unit Details
- 20 total beds, average daily census around 15
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU 1:1-2, Stepdown 1:3
- Pediatrician available in-house 24/7 with call room on unit
- Residents and advanced practice providers present 24/7
- Respiratory therapy manages ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP
- Telemetry monitored off-unit; central monitors at ICU and stepdown desks
- Charge nurse role depends on staffing; house supervisor available
Nursing Responsibilities
- Titration of sedation drips (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders
- Management of TPN, MIVF, and other infusions
- Floating within children’s units including Labor & Delivery, NICU, and Acute Pediatrics with normal patient ratios
- No call or standby requirement
Staffing Support
- Nurse aides available during day and night shifts to assist with feeding, fingerstick blood sugars, equipment needs, and bed preparation
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am
- Self-scheduling with possibility for block scheduling
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per 4-week schedule (Friday-Sunday count as weekend)
- Holiday work expected as part of permanent staff holiday rotation
Orientation & Training
- EPIC training
- New Staff Orientation (NSO)
- Competencies and equipment review with clinical preceptor
- 3 shifts in PICU with a mentor
Additional Information
- COVID-19 vaccination required (with medical or religious exemption process)
- Drivers license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
- Previous permanent or travel candidates must meet specific time restrictions before reapplying
- Dress code: dark gray (pewter) scrubs
Note: Candidates must be comfortable caring for adults in Labor & Delivery if needed.
