Registered Nurse (Surgical Acute) - Illinois, Peoria
Job Details
- Specialty: Surgical Acute
- Location: Peoria, Illinois
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit Beds: 63 (49 private, 9 observation beds)
- Shift Hours:
- Days: 07:00 - 19:30
- Nights: 19:30 - 07:30
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers float first, to units matching their experience level. ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients.
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed
Patient Care & Unit Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per RN
- Nights: 5-6 patients per RN
- Patient types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common care tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- RNs do not titrate drips except Heparin
- Charge nurses: 2 per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient care techs (PCTs):
- Days: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Nights: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties: Vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, ambulation
- Respiratory therapy equipment: CPAP and high flow managed by RT; RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with central monitor techs; bedside RNs do not read strips
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation:
- 2 shifts with preceptor
- 1 twelve-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with unit educator
- Scheduling: Block scheduling considered with prior approval
- Travelers do not self-schedule
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application in process
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must comply with drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen
Experience & Skills
- Specialty experience: Post-op care of surgical patients
- Skills: Critical thinking, good bedside manner, team player, willingness to ask for help
- Prior travel experience: Not specified or required
