Registered Nurse - Medical/Surgical Intensive Care

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

Seeking travel RNs for a Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The unit includes CVICU, COVID ICU, MS ICU, and PCU under the same critical care service line. Nurses will care for a variety of critical care patients including post-surgical, cardiac, and COVID cases.

Unit Details

• Beds:

  • CVICU: 12 beds
  • COVID ICU: 8 beds
  • MS ICU: 8 beds
  • PCU: 16-20 beds (with double occupancy rooms)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
  • PCU: 1:3 to 1:4
• Staffing:

  • Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort
  • House supervisor available 24/7 with some exceptions
  • Intensivists in-house 24/7
  • Respiratory therapists cover all areas but not ICU 24/7
  • No nurse aides or telemetry/monitor techs on unit; RNs read their own telemetry strips

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

• COVID-19 (including manual proning)
• Low-level neurological patients
• External ventricular drains (EVD)
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Sepsis
• Parenteral nutrition (PN)
• Acute renal failure (ARF)
• Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
• Rhabdomyolysis
• Post-myocardial infarction (MI)
• Detoxification
• Chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
• Cardiac surgical patients including Impella, TAVR, ventricular assist devices (VAD), STEMI, PCI, carotid endarterectomy (CEA), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
• Open heart surgery patients (travelers with experience preferred)

Required Skills & Certifications

• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing
• Strong EKG interpretation skills required
• Experience with ventilator weaning and troubleshooting
• Ability to titrate critical care drips including pressors, paralytics, sedation, antiarrhythmics, and anticoagulants
• Preferred experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT
• Familiarity with ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm, and Glidescopes for intubation
• Ability to interpret arterial blood gases (ABGs)

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Shift: 7am to 7pm
• Schedules made 4 weeks in advance with some self-scheduling allowed (finalized by manager)
• Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (including nights and days on varying weekends)
• Holiday requirement: 1 holiday and 1 holiday eve per winter season (not all holidays required)
• Possible on-call approximately once every 6 weeks during low census (no scheduled call)
• Floating required to PCU, MST, and EC ICU/PCU as needed
• Dress code: Professional scrubs, any color except camo; transitioning to navy scrubs in October

Orientation

• 8 hours general hospital orientation
• 1 twelve-hour shift with preceptor on unit
• 2nd twelve-hour shift with a buddy for support
• Additional orientation/checkoff for special skills such as open heart surgery or CRRT

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
• Minimum 1 year of ICU experience (higher years of experience preferred if indicated)
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam as described
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
