Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Description
- Work in a Hematology Oncology Med Surg Unit with rotating day/night shifts (12-hour shifts).
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5).
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs; no set/blocked scheduling.
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced by management.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units as needed.
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing priorities.
Patient Diagnoses
- Lymphoma
- Multiple Myeloma
- Acute and Chronic Leukemias
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Other non-hematologic cancers and benign hematology conditions
Special Procedures / Unit Details
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Certification
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience within the last year
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification
- Proficient in interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Experience utilizing Rapid Response Teams
- Phlebotomy experience including central line blood draws
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (must be current within 1 year of start)
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start
- Physical exam confirming good health and free of contagious disease (within 1 year)
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies
- Unit-specific competency exams including:
- Medication/pharmacology competency
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required annually)
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership role
- Employment application and skills checklist required
Additional Notes
- Floating to other units may be required.
- Shift flexibility with rotating days and nights.
- Orientation includes both classroom and hands-on preceptor time.
- Strong emphasis on infection control and patient safety.
