Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Intermediate Intensive Care (IMC/IICU)
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with experience in Intermediate Intensive Care (IMC/IICU) to care for adult patients including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases. The unit handles direct admissions, ICU transfers, and rapid response escalations with a patient acuity ratio of 1:3.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of RN experience within the specialty for first-time travelers (critical care experience required).
- At least 2 years of RN experience and 1 completed travel assignment preferred.
- Previous IICU/ICU experience with acuity of at least 1:3 required.
- Ventilator experience required.
- Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and telemetry monitoring.
- Medication management skills including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
- 1 year of EPIC charting experience required.
Prior travel experience:
- At least 1 completed travel assignment required.
Work Schedule
- Weekend shifts: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period.
- Floating: Agency staff may be required to float to other units or campuses as needed, limited to qualified areas with documented competencies.
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active South Carolina or multistate RN license required (no pending licenses accepted).
- Certifications required:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification (as applicable)
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Adult patients with trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology conditions.
- Monitoring or interventions every 1–2 hours.
- Use of special equipment such as patient repositioners, ceiling lifts, and Airtaps.
Summary of Required Skills
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
- Experience in ICU or IICU settings required; progressive care settings (PCU, DOU, IMC, Stepdown) considered.
- Medication management including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
- Ventilator management experience required.
Additional Requirements
- Must comply with facility policies including call-off and scheduling requests.
- Must complete required background checks, drug screening, and health documentation prior to start.
- Must complete online orientation modules and pre-assignment testing within specified timeframes.
- Badge photo required prior to start.
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands required.
- Immunizations and health screenings required (e.g., TB test, flu vaccine or exemption, Hepatitis B documentation).
Important Notes
- Facility is a Level I Adult Trauma Center with Magnet recognition for nursing excellence.
- Floating policy requires signed acknowledgment.
- Medication and arrhythmia competency testing required for RNs in critical care and telemetry units.
- Annual competency exams and core training required.

- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience
- One completed travel assignment
- ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Skilled in medication management, including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
