Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

A hospital in South Central Nebraska is seeking a Labor & Delivery RN for a 13-week assignment. This is a traveler-friendly facility with an average of 50 births per month. Mothers labor and deliver in one bed with no nursery; newborns stay in bassinets in their mothers' rooms to promote skin-to-skin care. The unit emphasizes strong teamwork and has been recognized for safe sleep practices.


Unit Details

  • 10 spacious, private LDRP rooms
  • 2 antepartum rooms
  • 1 OR suite
  • 2 on-call rooms for doctors
  • 1 lactation counselor, 1 maternity educator, 1 unit secretary/notary
  • Nurse aides/OB tech support (day and night shifts depending on census)
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) system: OBIX
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): MediTech
  • Telemetry: GE centrally monitored
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Pharmacy on call evenings, moving toward 24/7 coverage
  • Anesthesia on call with 20-minute response; OB/Neonatologist in-house
  • Charge nurse present on unit

Patient & Care Information

  • Average births: 50/month, 600/year
  • Common patient diagnoses: 32 weeks gestation (others transferred out), no VBAC, magnesium sulfate, insulin management
  • Mothers labor and deliver in one bed; babies remain with mothers at all times
  • Skin-to-skin care strongly supported
  • C-section experience required (circulating nurse role)
  • Floating to NICU for feeders and growers only

Staffing & Ratios

  • Couplets: 1 nurse to 3 patients
  • Laboring patients: 1 nurse to 1 patient
  • Weekend requirement: Every 3rd weekend (potentially every other depending on need)
  • Holidays: One major and one minor holiday required
  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts, 6am–6pm or 6pm–6am
  • Floor-specific orientation: 1–2 days

Required Qualifications

  • Current Nebraska RN license or compact license
  • BLS (AHA or ARC)
  • ACLS (AHA or ARC)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Strong IV skills required
  • C-section circulating experience required
  • Experience with EPIC charting is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) certification

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color provided by hospital
  • Up to every other week scheduling; possible extra 2 shifts every 6 weeks
  • No ventilators on unit
  • Strong teamwork culture
  • Recognized as a Safe Sleep Champion by the Department of Health & Human Services
