Registered Nurse – Cardiac Stepdown

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• 32 beds total (all private): 22 Stepdown beds & 12 Floor beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Stepdown: 1 RN to 3 patients
  • Floor: 1 RN to 6 patients
• Clinical Associates support at a ratio of 1 CA to 8-10 patients (goal of 4-5 CAs 24/7)
• Telemetry unit with Cardiac Monitor Technicians interpreting strips; RNs also read strips
• Respiratory equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow devices

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Cardiac Surgery post-op patients: CABG, MIDCAB, Maze procedure, valve replacements, Mitral clip, LVAD, heart transplants, TAVRs
• Vascular Surgery post-op/procedures: AAA repair, carotid endarterectomy, femoral bypass, angiograms, amputations
• Cardiology cases: STEMI, NSTEMI, heart failure, Watchman device, cardiac catheterization procedures (PTCA, stents, ICDs, ablations, pacemakers)

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS and ACLS certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) knowledge preferred
• Cardiac and vascular nursing experience required
• Ability to titrate drips including heparin, amiodarone, Cardizem, TPA, Lasix, dobutamine

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Night shifts only, three 12-hour shifts
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday shifts required as scheduled
• No call or standby requirement; overtime available
• Floating required to sister units within the Heart and Vascular Institute
• Unit orientation: 2-3 shifts
• Dress code: solid royal blue and white scrubs
• Team-oriented unit noted for excellent quality care

Additional Requirements

• Must have a valid driver’s license with an address outside a 50-mile radius of the facility
• Previous permanent candidates must have been off for 2 years before reapplying
• Previous travelers must have been off for 2 years after completing a full year on the unit
• Travel teams must be submitted together

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Minimum specialty experience: Cardiac/vascular nursing (years of experience not explicitly stated; cardiac/vascular experience required)
