Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • Unit Size: 33 beds (average daily census: 16)

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adult patients

  • Common Patient Diagnoses:

    • Trauma
    • Cardiac conditions
    • Overdose/substance abuse
    • Adult sepsis
    • Post-stent and pacemaker placement
    • Stroke
    • Vascular cases
    • Renal failure
    • Heart failure
    • Respiratory distress
  • RN Responsibilities:

    • Titrate drips including cardiac drips, insulin, sedation
    • Troubleshoot respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators
    • Read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (GE monitors)
    • Float occasionally to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Medical-Surgical units with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5
  • Support Staff: Nurse aides and healthcare support technicians assist based on census and patient needs.


Schedule & Orientation

  • Shift Options:

    • 06:30 - 18:30 (12-hour day shift)
    • 18:30 - 06:30 (12-hour night shift)
  • Scheduling:

    • Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers
    • Block scheduling generally not approved except possibly for weekends only
    • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
    • Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract period
  • Orientation:

    • One shift of unit/department-specific orientation required
    • Return to Orientation (RTO) needed upfront (7 days or less for 13-week contract)
    • Additional RTO not approved
  • On-Call:

    • If called back in, must arrive within 30 minutes

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)

Additional Information

  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination.
  • RN candidates must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided). Failure results in contract termination.
  • Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific health system (details withheld).
