Registered Nurse (RN) - Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) with 30 beds (14 private, 16 semi-private)
• Patient ratios goal: 1:4, typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
• Electronic Medical Record system: Sunrise
• Charge nurses take full patient assignments on both day and night shifts
• Clinical Assistant support with mixed shift coverage
• 2-3 CNAs per shift with ratios around 1:10-12

Shift Details

• 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM
• Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
• Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
• Night shift nurses work 4 weekend nights per 4-week schedule
• Day shift nurses work 4 weekend days per 4-week schedule but must also work a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
• Holiday work may be required but is typically covered by permanent staff

Patient Care & Responsibilities

• Common patient diagnoses: chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacemaker, pre/post cardiac catheterization, groin checks, intermediate care acuity overflow patients
• Manage radial bands and remove but do not pull sheaths
• Rarely manage chest tubes
• Manage patients on Tikosyn therapy
• RN must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips (Tele Techs available)
• RN responsible for titrating drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
• Respiratory equipment managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT)

Support Services

• Hospitalist in-house 24/7
• Intensivist in ICU 24/7
• Residents in-house 24/7
• IV team available 24/7 (IV team performs all IV starts)
• Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7 with Pyxis system

Orientation & Training

• First day: 4 hours with HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
• Second day: on unit with preceptor
• After orientation, nurse works independently

Additional Information

• Must be able to float to Telemetry or MedSurg units as needed (ratios up to 1:6 or 1:7 in MedSurg, rarely)
• May be required to float to Pandemic Unit
• Scrub color: Navy blue top and bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
• Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden
• 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions
• Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license required
• BLS Certification
• ACLS Certification
• NIHSS Certification
• Valid, unexpired driver’s license required
