Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – ED Holding Support

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift, 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
Unit: ED Holding (Float Pool)
Patient Population: Adult medical/surgical patients, including PCU level patients
Patient Diagnoses: Any adult medical/surgical diagnoses


Job Description

  • This is an ED Holding support position within the Emergency Department where patients await inpatient beds.
  • Nurses will care for medical/surgical and telemetry patients and may float to Emergency Department and MedSurg areas as needed.
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:6 for MedSurg/Telemetry or 1:4 for PCU level patients.
  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking is allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation.
  • Contract staff may be assigned to Storm or Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Unit orientation is 12 hours.
  • Scrubs color: Navy.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, with experience within the last year
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Telemetry monitoring including remote monitoring
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Renal failure management
  • Blood product administration
  • Peripheral line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Phlebotomy

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
  • Accessing ports and central line blood draws
  • Starting IVs
  • Experience with CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury
  • Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
  • Wound care and wound vac management

Patient Care Environment & Equipment

  • Standard cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and other monitoring systems
  • Unit systems include Pyxis (medication), Epic (documentation), and SBAR (communication)

Scheduling & Orientation

  • Manager schedules shifts
  • 12-hour unit orientation required
  • Night shift only, 36 hours per week
  • 13-week contract length

Compliance & Screening Requirements

  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and state-specific registry checks within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or PAPR training required within 1 year of start
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray as applicable
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations and titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination form)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Medication safety training and other facility-specific mandatory education modules
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum passing score of 82% (three attempts allowed)

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete all required facility-specific documents and training prior to start.
  • Candidates will be interviewed due to the high acuity and turnover rate of the unit.
  • This is a mixed unit with high acuity patients.
  • Candidates must be prepared to float between MedSurg, Telemetry, and Emergency Department areas.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic ED holding environment supporting a variety of adult medical and surgical patients with a focus on telemetry and PCU level care.
