Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro Unit

Location: Amarillo, Texas
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Orthopedic and Neurology
  • Patient Population: Medical Surgical, Orthopedic, and Neuro patients
  • Unit Size: 35 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Float Requirement: Yes, to units of equal or lesser acuity
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling handled case by case
  • Documentation System: EPIC (experience within last 6 months required)
  • Telemetry monitored in a centralized unit
  • Support Staff: Patient Care Technicians, Patient Transporters, House discharge nurse floating across departments
  • Charge Nurse: Free floating charge nurse
  • Parking: Free proximal covered parking
  • Meals: Discounted meals available
  • Local Traveler Rule: Must live at least 50 miles from the facility to qualify

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Experience with EPIC documentation system (within last 6 months)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required upon hire
    • Education verification required (highest level)
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 12 months of start
    • Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually
    • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
      • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
      • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
      • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
      • Hepatitis B (positive titer, series, or declination)
      • Varicella (positive titer, 2 vaccines, or documented history)
      • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption during flu season
    • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
    • Onsite drug screen during orientation (only one attempt allowed)
  • Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology competency, color blind testing, and other core competencies as applicable
  • Photo for badge required

  • Local traveler radius rule applies (must live 50+ miles away)
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Float to units of equal or lesser acuity required

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of experience in medical surgical, orthopedic, or neuro patient care, who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a 1:6 ratio and has recent EPIC experience. Prior travel experience is not required.
