Job Summary

This position works in the respiratory therapy unit of a hospital and requires independent clinical judgment to provide respiratory care in accordance with physician orders. Responsibilities include administering respiratory tests and treatments to patients with respiratory diseases and disorders, including critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients. The role may require working shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Initiate, monitor, and maintain life support ventilation systems for patients requiring continuous ventilation, including emergency intubation and ventilator adjustments.
• Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of the resuscitation team, including airway management and mechanical ventilation initiation.
• Assess and evaluate patients with respiratory disorders, recommending treatment methods and consulting with physicians.
• Administer age-specific respiratory treatments, including medication preparation and chest physiotherapy.
• Operate pulmonary function testing equipment and pulse oximetry monitors.
• Provide patient and family education on respiratory treatments and care.
• Maintain safety, infection control, and confidentiality standards.
• Perform cardiopulmonary rehabilitation teaching and assist with electroencephalogram electrode placement and polysomnography in sleep studies.
• Clean, sterilize, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment; perform minor repairs and routine record keeping.

Required Qualifications

• Must hold a valid Hawaii Respiratory Therapist license.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) recognized by the National Board of Respiratory Care is desirable.
• Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification required.
• Experience working with critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients preferred.

Additional Information

• Holiday shifts may be required on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
