Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend

Unit Details

• Level of Care: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Medical-Surgical
• Number of Beds: 27-28
• Patient Population: Adults
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • PCU: 1:4
  • Med/Surg: 1:5 (Nights 1:5-6)
• Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
• Charge Nurse: Yes
• Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
• Float: Yes, to same level of care units (Med/Surg and PCU)

Patient Population & Diagnoses

• Oncology (from diagnosis to remission or end-of-life care)
• Trauma
• Mixed Med/Surg patients

Required Certifications & Competencies

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• Oncology certification preferred but not required (Chemotherapy certification preferred)
• ONS/ONCC certification noted as required
• Competency in ventilator care and hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000, ICP) – training provided in real time
• Experience with EMR system: EPIC
• IV Pumps: Alaris

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of RN experience in PCU and Oncology or Med/Surg
• Charge nurse experience requires minimum 1 year
• First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

• Titration of drips including insulin (occasionally) and cardizem
• Common medications/drips: chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix
• Adherence to fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
• Pass/fail skills exam during orientation (90% required to pass)

Orientation & Training

• 2 days orientation
• Open book exam on skills learned during orientation

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Nebraska
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience
• Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
• Oncology experience
• BLS issued by American Heart Association
• ACLS certification
• NIHSS certification
• ONS or ONCC certification
