Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - ED Holding Support (Float Pool)

Job Summary

This is a Registered Nurse position supporting the Emergency Department (ED) Holding unit within a float pool. The ED Holding unit cares for adult medical/surgical patients awaiting inpatient beds. Patients may have various diagnoses, including PCU-level acuity. Nurses will primarily care for MS/Telemetry patients but must also float to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Care for adult medical/surgical patients in the ED Holding unit.
• Manage PCU level patients as assigned.
• Float between MS/Tele, ED, and MedSurg units.
• Use telemetry monitoring (both on-unit and remote).
• Participate in Rapid Response Teams as needed.
• Administer blood products and manage peripheral and PICC lines.
• Provide care including colostomy, feeding tubes, renal failure management, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway management.
• Interpret dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases (ABGs).
• Administer medications including heparin and insulin.
• Perform phlebotomy and other nursing procedures as required.

Shift & Scheduling

• Night shift only.
• 36 hours per week.
• Every other weekend required.
• Maximum of 7 days RTO (Return to Office) allowed.
• Storm/Hurricane team participation required during catastrophic events or disasters.
• Manager schedules shifts.

Patient Ratios

• Medical/Surgical/Telemetry: 1:6
• PCU level patients: 1:4

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical/Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Ability to interpret and manage dysrhythmias
• Experience with telemetry monitoring including remote monitoring
• Experience using Rapid Response Teams
• Knowledge and experience in renal failure management
• Phlebotomy skills
• PICC line management
• Chest tube management including Emerson/Pleur-evac systems
• Experience with CPAP/BiPAP
• Experience with High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)

Preferred Qualifications

• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Experience with IV insulin protocols.
• Pre/Post Hemodialysis management.
• Central line blood draws and starting IVs.
• Care of patients with CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic trauma, total joint replacements.
• Wound care and wound vac experience.

Orientation & Training

• Unit orientation: 12 hours.
• Must complete required facility-specific education and compliance modules prior to start.
• Navy scrubs required.

Patient Population

• Adult medical/surgical patients with a variety of diagnoses awaiting inpatient beds in the ED.

Equipment & Systems

• Cardiac monitors, IV pumps, telemetry systems.
• Documentation and communication via Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR.

Compliance & Background Requirements

• Background checks including local, federal, and national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification.
• Drug screening within 30 days of start.
• Physical exam within 1 year of start (or 30 days if past positive TB).
• Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training.
• Immunizations and titers required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if needed).
  • Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination form.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption during flu season.
• TB screening with negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year. If positive, chest x-ray and physician-signed TB questionnaire required.
• Completion of facility-specific orientation modules including medication safety, confidentiality, hospital policies, and annual compliance training.

Additional Notes

• Candidates must be prepared to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment with frequent patient turnover.
• Candidates will be interviewed prior to placement.
• Participation in emergency response teams (storm/hurricane) is mandatory.
