Job Opportunity: Med Surg Tele Registered Nurse (Night Shift)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Night shift position (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Work 3 shifts per week, each 12 hours (36 hours total)
  • Float within units of equivalent or lower acuity
  • Patient care areas include General Surgery, Trauma, Vascular, Wound, and Plastics
  • Estimated nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
  • No on-call duties

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg or Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Proficiency in intermediate nursing skills
  • Prior experience with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required within 1 year of start and updated annually)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required prior to start)
  • Unit-specific competency exams as required
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NIH Stroke Certification) – verify per assignment

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including FBI and state fingerprinting (Ohio BCI & FBI) completed within 90 days of start
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually thereafter
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal supervisor
  • Employment application and skills checklist required prior to start
  • Fingerprinting must be completed using specific Ohio codes and within required timelines; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days or results are older than 1 year
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are not finalized before start

Work Environment & Notes

  • Facility uses Epic EHR system exclusively
  • No on-call or weekend requirements beyond scheduled shifts
  • Floating to various units within the hospital’s East Tower
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and credentialing processes

This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg Telemetry RNs seeking a travel contract opportunity with night shifts in a hospital setting requiring strong telemetry skills and Epic experience.
