Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts (days, nights, or combination) based on unit needs
  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes not guaranteed
  • Med/Surg experience required; Hematology Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-schedule requests submitted for review
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
  • Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units

Patient Diagnoses

  • Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Acute and Chronic Leukemias
  • Sickle Cell Disease
  • Other non-hematologic cancers and benign hematology conditions

Special Procedures / Unit Details

  • Chemotherapy administration
  • Blood transfusions
  • IV antibiotics
  • Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
  • Insulin and heparin drips
  • Strong focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing
  • Telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line blood draws
  • Peripheral line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs
  • Computerized charting (EPIC)

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association

Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification preferred but not required.


Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum of 1 year Med/Surg nursing experience within the last year
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting
  • Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience
  • Central line blood draw competency

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting (BCI/FBI)
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
  • Various health documents including:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Immunizations and titers (MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season
  • References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leader
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required annually
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually
  • Monthly monitoring for exclusion lists and sanctions (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
