Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on a mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients.
  • Unit has approximately 48 beds (24 PCU and 24 MS Telemetry).
  • Patient population includes a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers with high acuity.
  • Pediatric patients are rarely cared for on this unit; pediatric experience is not required.
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Schedule

  • Self-scheduling requests are accepted before final schedule posting.
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
    • Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
  • Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
  • Oncology nursing experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.
  • NURSYS verification for RN, LPN/LVN, or AP licensure.

Unit Equipment & Procedures

  • Use of B450 monitors with GE telemetry system.
  • Bladder Scanner, Alaris pumps, Continuous Bladder Irrigation, and PCA pumps.
  • Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemotherapy course available for professional development.

Patient Care Details

  • High acuity oncology patients with diverse diagnoses.
  • Infection prevention and patient safety are priorities.

Orientation & Competency Requirements

  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting.
  • Education accreditation verification required for nursing degree (accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers.
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer unless medically exempt.
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
  • Monthly monitoring through workforce screening systems for exclusion lists.

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
