Description

Registered Nurse - Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Summary

  • 12-hour day/night or night shifts, rotating schedule based on department needs (shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks, but not guaranteed).
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required.
  • Patient population includes those requiring continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy, soft tissue malignancy care, symptom management, and comorbidity management.
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NURSYS verification for RN, LPN/LVN, or AP licensure.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
  • Clinical skills including:
    • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
    • Accessing ports
    • Arterial line management
    • Central line care and PICC line management
    • IV starts
    • Assisting with chest tube insertion and removal
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
    • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio required.
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, PALS, NRP) — verify per unit specifics.

  • B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
  • Bladder scanner
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Stryker beds

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific codes apply).
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, etc.).
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (mask required if declined)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • Must review and sign dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Required to complete fraud, waste, and abuse training and compliance policies annually.
  • Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.

Notes

  • Shift assignments may include days, nights, or a combination depending on staffing needs.
  • Floating to other units of similar or lower acuity is required.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • This is a travel/contract position with a 16-week assignment length.
