Description
Registered Nurse (ICU)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical-Surgical ICU with 34 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4 to 1:5
- Medical-Surgical: 1:5 to 1:6
- Patient types include adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
- Common diagnoses: respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure (CRRT), general surgery, psychiatric/overdose, GI bleeds, cancer surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy), neuro surgery (experience not required)
- Use of advanced monitoring and equipment such as CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, ICP monitoring, Zoll Thermoguard, Bell Mont rapid transfuser
Job Responsibilities
- Titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
- Read and interpret telemetry strips (no telemetry techs on unit) using Draeger heart monitoring system
- Attend Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and Codes as charge nurse (charge nurse takes assignment)
- Float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
- Collaborate with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers in a team environment
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
- Adherence to fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume tertiary hospital environment
- Strong critical thinking, communication skills, positive attitude, and teamwork
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- Scheduling determined by manager based on unit needs (no self-scheduling)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday as needed
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
Additional Notes
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated facilities
- Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
This position is ideal for ICU RNs with solid critical care experience seeking a 13-week contract in a dynamic tertiary care setting.
