Registered Nurse (MedSurg Float) - North Dakota
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Unit Type: Medical-Surgical Float
- Unit Size: 61 beds combined
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1:5
- Night shift: 1:6
- Nurse Aide Ratio: 1:15
- Floating Required: Yes
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call or Standby Requirement: Yes, with LCD (likely limited call duty)
- Dress Code: Any scrub color
- Orientation: Travel Clinical Based Orientation (CBO) with unit-specific float checklist; orientation includes every other week and night shifts, first to float

- Surgical patients including:
- Total joint replacements
- Fractures
- Bariatric surgery
- Urology
- General surgery
- Medical patients including:
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)
- Shortness of Breath (SOB)
- Diabetic issues
Equipment & Monitoring
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, High-flow oxygen
- Telemetry: Yes
- Monitor Techs read telemetry strips
- RNs confirm telemetry readings
Clinical Practice
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- No charge nurse or house supervisor role on this unit
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- BLS Certification required
- Specialty Experience: MedSurg Float (experience matching current med/surg unit expectations)
Summary
This is a 13-week Medical-Surgical Float RN assignment in Bismarck, ND, requiring 12-hour shifts with every other weekend and holiday coverage. The unit cares for a mixed surgical and medical patient population with telemetry monitoring and respiratory support equipment. Floating between units is required, and prior med/surg experience is expected. BLS certification is mandatory.
